Personalized Care You and Your Child Can Trust

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is used to treat all types of patients, from kids to teens.  It is used to realign the teeth into a more natural position.  It is also used to straighten teeth and correct any imbalance in the bite.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is dental treatment that focuses on straightening and aligning your teeth and jaws.

As an orthodontist, Dr. Matt, began his career by becoming a qualified dentist. Next, he completed over 2 more years of specialized training in orthodontics. This makes Dr. Matt an expert in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of malocclusions – problems with spacing, positioning, or alignment of the teeth and jaws.

At Battiste Orthodontics, we treat a wide range of malocclusions for adults, teens, and children age 7 and older. Our primary goal is to provide you with a healthy, beautiful smile through excellent, efficient, and affordable orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontics impacts your health, appearance, and more.

Crooked, unevenly spaced, or misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean. This makes them more prone to tooth decay and periodontal disease.

If you suffer from crooked, uneven, or misaligned teeth, orthodontic treatment can help.

The length of orthodontic treatment will depend on your individual needs. During your consultation with Dr. Matt, we will discuss your options and our recommendations. Once you select your treatment, we will estimate its length. Most orthodontic treatment is complete within six months to two years.

At Battiste Orthodontics, we offer a variety of advanced solutions for treatment. Depending on your needs, we may recommend:

  • Colored Braces
  • Clear Braces
  • Invisalign®
  • Invisalign teen®
  • AcceleDent™

Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment

Though orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age, the most common time for treatment to begin is during adolescence. Once teeth have fully grown in, any issues with alignment or spacing become more easily identified.

During your child’s consultation with Dr. Matt, we will evaluate your teen’s individual needs. Dr. Matt will recommend an orthodontic treatment plan to provide optimal results in an efficient manner.

In every case, we will take time to fully discuss Dr. Matt’s recommendations and your teen’s options. We will answer any questions or concerns you have before treatment begins.

Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces use small brackets that are affixed to teeth to hold thin wires in place. These wires are minutely adjusted over time to gently guide teeth into the proper placement and alignment within the mouth. Although braces don’t hurt, in the first couple days after getting braces, your child may feel a slight discomfort as their teeth and mouth begin adjusting to their new braces.

Braces Care
When your child has braces, it is important for them to brush their teeth four (4) to five (5) times a day. This means brushing after every meal if possible, to prevent food from getting stuck.

What they eat and do not eat will directly affect the condition of their teeth during orthodontic treatment. Here are some tips on what kinds of foods they should avoid and how to carefully enjoy some of their favorites.

Hard Foods
At times, it is difficult to break and chew certain foods. Eating hard foods can be harmful during orthodontic treatment because they can bend or break wires and even displace brackets. Your child should avoid them entirely after they have had their wires changed, since teeth are the most tender at this stage.

Tips for eating hard foods:

  1. Fruits are an essential part of a balanced diet. If your child wants to eat apples, pears and
  2. peaches, make sure they do not directly bite into them. Instead, cut them into small
  3. pieces before consuming.
  4. If they enjoy eating almonds, cashews or peanuts, consider grinding them and adding it
  5. to cereals and yogurt.
  6. While eating chicken wings or ribs, remove the bones before consuming. This
  7. prevents them from accidentally chewing on a bone and dislocating a bracket.
  8. While eating corn, remove the kernels from the cob to help prevent damage to braces.
  9. Avoid chewing on ice. Your child can suck on ice cubes but never bite them.

Sticky and Sweet Foods

Sticky foods can get stuck to teeth and braces and can even result in the braces getting pulled off. Sweet, sugary foods are high in sugar and their consumption can lead to tooth decay.

Tips for eating sticky and sweet foods:

  1. If your child enjoys eating candy, instruct them to suck on it instead of chewing. Be sure they rinse their mouth with water to avoid sugar buildup on your teeth.
  2. Avoid chewing on gum. Gum can stick to braces and may be difficult to clean. It can also loosen the wires and brackets.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a set of clear removable aligners that are worn over the teeth. These aligners can be removed to allow for eating, brushing, and flossing normally. Invisalign® is comfortable, convenient, and easy to use.

Teeth that are crowded, gapped, or misaligned are more difficult to clean. Over time, this can lead to increased risks of tooth decay and gum disease. Crowded and misaligned teeth are also more prone to crack and wear. Straightening with Invisalign® can protect against these issues.

Invisalign® is a non-invasive, aesthetic solution for straightening teeth. If your teeth are crowded, gapped, or misaligned, Invisalign® can provide a healthier, more beautiful smile.

First, you will have a consultation with Dr. Matt. We will determine if you are a good candidate for using Invisalign®. A 3D model is created of their teeth. This model is used to design the steps of your individualized treatment plan. With this model, you can see what your teeth will look like after treatment.

Invisalign® aligners are custom-fabricated for your teeth. About every two to four weeks, they will change to a new, slightly straighter aligner.

Invisalign® patients experience less pain, discomfort, and mouth sores than patients with traditional metal braces. Invisalign® also has a lower risk of plaque buildup during treatment since you can remove aligners for proper brushing and flossing.
